Most paper towel sheets are way bigger than what you actually need. Wiping a counter, cleaning up a small spill, drying your hands — none of that requires a full sheet. You're just tearing off more than you need out of habit, and so are your kids.
The fix is one cut with a sharp knife. You end up with two half rolls that fit your standard holder just fine, and you go through them at half the speed.
What You Need
- A paper towel roll
- A big, sharp, non-serrated knife
- A cutting board
How to Do It
Set the paper towel roll on its side on a cutting board.
Find the middle of the roll and position your knife there.
Press down firmly and saw through with a smooth back-and-forth motion. The key is steady pressure — let the knife do the work.
You now have two half rolls. Pop one on the holder, store the other under the sink or wherever you keep your extras.
The half rolls fit a standard paper towel holder without any modification. I keep one on the holder and one near the table. Why two spots? Kids. That's the whole reason. You already know.
Your kids will still grab "too much" — but now too much is half of what it used to be. Small wins.
