Wash Your Shower Curtain in the Washing Machine

No scrubbing, no chemicals, no effort. Throw it in and go do something else.

Most people either scrub their shower curtain by hand or just throw it out when it gets gross enough. There's a better way and it takes about 30 seconds of actual effort on your part.

Just wash it in the washing machine. That's it. That's the tip.

What You Need

  • A washing machine
  • Your regular laundry detergent
  • A couple of towels (optional but helpful)

How to Do It

  1. Take the curtain off the rings — you don't need to remove the rings themselves, just unhook the curtain.

  2. Throw it in the washing machine. Toss in a couple of bath towels if you have them — they act as scrubbers and help balance the load.

  3. Add your normal detergent. Regular cycle, warm water.

  4. When it's done, hang it back up on the rod to air dry. Don't put it in the dryer.

Does it actually work? Yes. Soap scum, mildew, pink slime — all of it comes out. The curtain comes out looking close to new. The towels do a lot of the physical scrubbing work while it tumbles around.

Check the curtain label first if you're worried — most fabric and plastic/PEVA curtains handle a machine wash fine on a gentle or regular cycle. If yours is some delicate specialty material, hand wash it. But the standard ones you get at any store? Machine wash them.

Zero effort, great results. I don't know why this isn't common knowledge. Stop scrubbing your shower curtain.
